You would expect a solo album from a man with such an impressive history as Tim Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House, The Finn Brothers) to sound special, so it’s disappointing to hear the man merely coasting along on new album ‘Imaginary Kingdom’…
It’s not that it’s a bad album – there are at least a handful of gems to be found, including the stirring ballad ‘Astounding Moon’, the gorgeous ‘Resting’ and the mellow, haunting closing track ‘Unsinkable’. However, for the rest of the album it appears that Finn is on auto pilot, turning out nice but unremarkable tunes such as ‘Midnight Coma’ and ‘Horizon’ which are firmly rooted in middle-of-the-road territory. For anyone else, this album would be better than average, but for someone of Tim Finn’s calibre you expect so much more… Disappointing…
