It's been nearly four years since Christina Aguilera embraced her inner dirty girl with 'Stripped' and she's keen to prove that she's all grown-up and mature with her new album 'Back To Basics'. Well, kind of...
This 22-track double album is meant to concentrate on referencing music from the 20s, 30s and 40s, but there's still plenty of modern influences on this record. On the retro vibe, we've got Christina trying, but failing, to imitate Billie Holiday on 'I Got Trouble' and 'Understand', and flirting with sexy 40s-style showtunes on single 'Aint' No Other Man' and 'Nasty, Naughty Boy'.
However, tracks such as 'Back In The Day' and 'On Our Way' stick firmly to Christina's previous R'n'B style tunes, while 'Still Dirrty' reminds us that she's still got her wild side...
It's all fairly average stuff, to be honest, but the stand-out track is easily the stripped down guitar ballad 'Save Me From Myself', on which Christina has never sounded better. More like this please...
