Model Railway Day

Type : Events

Ireland's biggest one day model railway exhibition will feature over 30 railway layouts and associated exhibits.

Model Railway DayOrganised by the Friends of Cultra, this event takes place within the Transport Museum. The model layouts and associated exhibits on display sit alongside the full-scale locomotives and carriages in the Rail Gallery.
The event, which is the largest show of displays to feature in Northern Ireland, will play host to models of trains and railways that have become iconic to the country over the past 50 years.

Of particular interest to local enthusiasts will be layouts depicting Moira, Lisburn, Ballyclare (Broad Gauge) and the iconic concrete viaducts at Bleach Green Junction near Whiteabbey. Earlier in 2014 Ireland's last independent railway company - the Londonderry and Lough Swilly Railway Company - closed after 160 years, even though it had abandoned railways in favour of buses over half a century ago. We mark the passing of "the Swilly" with the exhibition premier of Alan Gee's new model of Burtonport.

2014 also sees a number of major wartime anniversaries including the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1, the Model Railway Day 8 Nov75th anniversary of the start of World War 2 and the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings. We are pleased to illustrate the role railways played in wartime by bringing to Ireland for the first time Peter and Julie Goss's superb layout Rowland's Castle which depicts operations on the Southern Railway in England in the run-up to D-Day; it has featured extensively in the model railway press in recent years.

And there will also be plenty to appeal to the youngest of train fans including a visit by that most famous of tank engines on a replica of the the Rev. Awdry's own portable layout, plus a chance to win a Hornby train set.

Model Railway Day is supported by North Down Borough Council and P&O Ferries.
