On 26 October 1914 the last major expedition in the heroic age of Antarctic exploration commenced. Endurance with Ernest Shackleton on board set sail from Buenos Aires headed towards the South Atlantic, also on the voyage were the ‘Men wanted for the hazardous journey low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness and a doubtful safe return’.

To mark the centenary of that epic journey the RDS is delighted to welcome Professor Rorke Bryan to talk about that undertaking and his own Antarctic adventures. Fifty three years ago Rorke joined the British Antarctic survey and in January 1966 he gave a talk at the RDS about aspects of his work and the everyday dangers it then presented. He now revisits the Society to give an illustrated comparison of Antarctic research and exploration in the Shackleton era and during his own Antarctic sojourn with those of the present time.
This is a unique opportunity to hear a speaker who bridges the gap between then and now, on a subject that remains of constant interest today.

Professor Rorke Bryan from the University of Toronto will give talks in Cork, Dublin and Athy during his visit to Ireland in October. The RDS Library Speaker Series and The Cork Literary and Scientific Society are holding their respective talks in association with each other. This will permit Members’ of the RDS to attend the Cork talk on Thursday, 23 October free of charge by producing their current RDS Member card (guests of RDS Members must pay the appropriate fee - €8) at the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork.
Members of the Cork Literary and Scientific Society will be welcome guests to the RDS talk in the RDS Library on Wednesday, 29 October.
