About the play
This adrenaline-fuelled ride into Dublin’s underworld narrated first by the Howie, then picked up by the Rookie, unfolds within a landscape of feverish drinking, casual sex and visceral violence. In this tale of two halves, we meet unforgettable characters from Ladyboy, the psychotic thug hell bent on avenging the deaths of his fighting fish, to monstrous Avalanche, looking for love from her bar stool.

Originally a two-hander, Mark O’Rowe now transforms his award-winning play into a one-man monologue brimming with ferocious lyricism and coruscating wit. Tom Vaughan-Lawlor prowls, dances and dives to give a blistering performance, for which he was named Best Actor at this year’s Irish Times Theatre Awards. The production also won Best Lighting Design.

Speaking from the set of Love/Hate, where he plays Nidge, and where filming for the fifth series is currently underway, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor said: 'I'm really looking forward to bringing Howie the Rookie back to Dublin, and I'm delighted London audiences will get a chance to see Mark O'Rowe's stunning play at the Barbican.'

Mark O’Rowe, who not only wrote but also directed the award-winning production of his play Howie the Rookie, commented: ‘Working with Tom Vaughan-Lawlor has been an absolute high point in my theatrical life, and so I am thrilled beyond belief that audiences both in Dublin and London are going to have another opportunity to see his astonishing performance in Howie the Rookie.’

The production will play for one week only at the Olympia Theatre, Dublin from 11 - 15 November, before transferring to the Barbican in London from 19 - 29 November.
