The story is set in Philadelphia in 1977 and the show is filled with the funky pop sounds from the time. Sassy nightclub singer, Deloris van Cartier, witnesses her gangster boyfriend, Curtis, killing one of his henchmen suspected of squealing to the cops.

An old school friend from the police department, “Sweaty Eddie”, arranges for her to be concealed in a down-at-heel convent for her own protection. Reluctantly accepting her new charge, the Mother Superior passes her off as a visiting Sister, with hilarious consequences.

After discovering just how austere cloistered life can be, Deloris transforms the nuns’ choir into a classy act, rockets them to public attention and blows her own cover in the process. Curtis tracks her down to her place of refuge and the Sisters act together to defend Deloris, who is moved by their kindness. Her eventual rescue by Eddie the policeman gives him a chance to demonstrate just how cool he can really be.

Portrush Music Society is privileged to be the first amateur society to stage this show in Ireland. Its formidable singing reputation does justice to the wonderful songs of Alan Menken and Glenn Slater. Costumes and talent will sparkle and glitter. This is one show where attendance is guaranteed to “Take You to Heaven”!
