BECKETT'S LAST ACT

Another in our series of events to celebrate BANN BECKETT

A brilliant play, based on real events

We watch as a production of 'Krapp's Last Tape' at the Royal Court Theatre reaches the technical rehearsal, the dress rehearsal and ...beyond....
The Director can see all his work on the play grinding to an unsatisfactory halt.

The Designer takes on the extra role of Crisis Manager.

The Wardrobe Mistress stitches together the dream of a new life as Beckett takes refuge in her workroom.

The Flyman absorbs the dark world of the play from his perch high above the stage...

Beckett is acutely dismayed that, in his opinion, the actor playing Krapp is totally wrong for the part ... a part that is the closest of all Beckett's characters to himself.

We see his unflinching and single-minded determination as he withdraws into Anxiety and Resentment.

The Director is stuck between the alienated Actor and the uncompromising Writer ... what can he do to make this work?

The Designer, who is a loyal friend of Beckett, absorbs the tension and continues the preparations as best she can, but despite her years of experience, this is a very big challenge.
Will the play reach the stage? .... will it be anything like it is supposed to be?

Eventually, Beckett himself steps forward and, in a last desperate effort to demonstrate what he wants, performs the play to a stunned and accidental audience of no more than 10 people....
Will that be enough to put things right ?
He will never know the tragic consequences as the Designer, a figure of warmth and strength for everyone, reveals an outcome no-one could have expected.

Based on a true story.
