The first thing you notice when you hold a Boojum burrito is the heft. Its weight in the hand is something you begin to crave as much as anything else.
It is the first judgment you make, how does the heft of your current burrito match up to previous conquests. How does it compare to other burritos you may have mistakenly bought.
Just hold it for a time in your hand, enjoy the heft.
The concept of a burrito is a simple one: rice, meat, veg, salsa, cheese, sour cream (or some combination thereof), all wrapped in a large tortilla. This simplicity and perfection is obviously something the people behind Boojum knew about.
The menu is largely unchanged since the day it opened, but your options have not been limited, instead you have the choice of a small number of absolutely perfect combinations.
The constituent parts are cooked just metres from you: chicken is being diced, rice is being boiled and guacamole is being prepared from scratch. Those boxes of avocadoes are not for decoration.
Add to all this an ever increasing selection of hot sauces, and beer from across the world, and really the only question I find myself asking is, ‘if Boojum is open, why would you eat anywhere else?’
Affectionately known as ‘Queuejum’, this Belfast original took a simple idea, kept it simple, perfected it, and offers what for this writer is the best value for money and tastiest food you are likely to find.
It is not for nothing that Belfast now has more places offering burritos, but in the world of local Mexican food, Boojum is simply unbeatable.
