Troyka Live Tonight - Brilliant Corners

"Who knew Belfast would sustain a dedicated jazz music festival for the last three years?" Is how I would have opened this piece if I didn't already know that Belfast is a wild and adventurous place, full of a desire to be challenged and pushed.

2015 sees Moving On Music bringing back their Brilliant Corners Festival. In 2013 it was a risky prospect. While the jazz shows they would promote a few times a year did well, was the city ready for three or four days of concentrated events. Well, here we are three years on, and it seems the answer is a very definite yes.

The key strength of this festival, in my humble opinion, is that it fully embraces a description told to me by one of the organisers, when I interviewed him for the first year of the event. He called it a "festival of jazz, and related music".

It is the 'related music' that sets Brilliant Corners apart. It is expands the horizons of what a jazz festival can be, for both audience and players. Some of Brilliant Corners events are definitely safe to bring your grandparents to, others will challenge even the most adventurous jazz lover.
